A bill that would have permitted certain individuals to pose as prospective tenants and secretly record conversations with landlords to gather evidence of potential discriminatory housing practices has been shelved for the remainder of 2023.

The California Apartment Association opposed the legislation. Assemblyman Kevin McCarty, D-Sacramento, has withdrawn the bill from consideration. Now a two-year bill, AB 1086 may be resurrected in 2024, during the second year of the two-year session.
