Despite strong support from the California Apartment Association, San Diego City Council candidate Ricardo Flores lost his bid for council Seat 9 in the Nov. 8 election. Flores, who recieved financial backing from CAA’s political action committee, garnered 47.5 percent of the vote, while his opponent, Georgette Gomez,  received  52.5 percent. During her campaign, Gomez said she would make addressing the city’s high cost of housing a priority. During an interview this week about rising rents in San Diego, Whitney Benzian of CAA pointed to a lack of housing supply. The CAA executive also pointed to excessive government regulations and fees, which makes development more costly to builders, and ultimately, so residents. “Costs for permits, water, development impact fees — things like that are burdensome,” Benzian, vice president of public affairs for CAA San Diego, told CW6 News reporter Gary Buzel. The California Apartment Association is a partner in the Housing Our Heroes program, which has helped more than 200 homeless veterans find rental housing since the program debuted in San Diego on March 1. So far, 130 landlords are taking part in the program, which offers financial incentives. “Really the bottom line is the ‘Housing Our Heroes’ campaign is making a difference in veterans’ lives, and entire families are making their way off the streets,” Mayor Kevin Faulconer said in this news release. “Our heroes don’t need to spend another night on the street.” Related content:  Mayor encourages homeless veterans… Read More

Two months after winning big at CAA’s Mission Awards, Broadstone Balboa Park is in the news for promoting kindness among its residents. In October, the Alliance Residential community won a Mission Award in the Property of the Year 1-250 category. And now, ABC News is recognizing Broadstone Balboa Park’s “12 Acts of Kindness” campaign, which ran for 12 days this month. This ABC News story says residents documented their good deeds with the hashtag #BroadstoneRAK. The California Apartment Association’s Whitney Benzian appeared on television Monday to discuss CAA San Diego’s philanthropic efforts to end homelessness in the city. Benzian, executive director of CAA’s San Diego division, appeared on KUSI’s Good Morning San Diego, along with Kris Michel, CEO of the Downtown San Diego Partnership. CAA’s members have donated about $18,000 to the Partnership’s Make Change Count program to end homelessness. The program allows the public to make donations at collection boxes that resemble red parking meters along curbs in San Diego.
