A newly introduced bill in the California Legislature could encourage local governments to adopt rent control ordinances and other tenant-related policies by offering status as a “pro-housing” jurisdiction.
SB 262 by Sen. Aisha Wahab, D-Hayward, would expand the state’s “pro-housing” designation criteria if a local jurisdiction provided rent control, legal funding for eviction defense, and safe parking and camping programs. Under current law, jurisdictions that receive this designation gain an advantage when applying for competitive state housing and infrastructure grants.
