The California Office of Emergency Services wants to make sure landlords and their residents are aware of the state’s early warning system for earthquakes.
Dubbed Earthquake Warning California, the system uses ground motion sensors to detect earthquakes before humans can feel them and then warns people nearby.
To receive earthquake warnings, rental property owners, tenants and other Californians can use tools such as:
- MyShake App
- Android Earthquake Alerts
- Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEAs).

“Earthquake warnings are designed to provide individuals seconds to take life-saving actions such as to Drop, Cover, and Hold On before shaking is felt,” the site says.
