Rental owners and property managers in the city of Sacramento are focused on complying with AB 1482 as well as the Tenant Protection and Relief Act passed by the Sacramento City Council. However, they should not forget about the local rent control and “just cause” initiative that already qualified for the ballot in 2020.
In October 2018, the registrar of voters certified that a coalition of tenant and labor activists, including ACCE and SEIU, had submitted enough signatures for the initiative to be placed on a future ballot. The coalition intended for the initiative to appear on the November 2018 ballot but were unable to obtain enough signatures by the deadline for that election. Now, the Sacramento City Council must decide whether the measure will appear on the March or November 2020 ballot.
