An initiative that would raise taxes on property sales valued at more than $5 million has qualified for the fall ballot in the city of Los Angeles.
The Los Angeles County Registrar of Voters has certified that proponents submitted the roughly 65,000 valid voter signatures needed to place the “documentary transfer” tax before voters on Nov. 8.
The measure includes a two-tier assessment that would levy a 4% tax on transactions between $5 million and $10 million, with a 5.5% tax kicking in for sales above $10 million.
The funds would go to a variety of homeless housing and prevention strategies including “right to counsel” funding of lawyers for those facing eviction.
