Assemblyman David Chiu, the author of California’s statewide rent cap legislation and a key negotiator of the COVID-19 eviction moratorium, has been tapped by San Francisco Mayor London Breed to become the city’s next city attorney.
Chiu, a San Francisco Democrat, has served in the Assembly since 2014 and currently chairs the Housing and Community Development Committee.
Chiu will replace Dennis Herrera as city attorney and has tentatively slated Oct. 31 as his last day in the Legislature, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. After Chiu officially submits his resignation, Gov. Newsom will have two weeks to call for a special election.
