Rental housing providers will have two opportunities in June to deepen their understanding of fair housing protections and the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program through webinars hosted by the California Apartment Association.
The first webinar, Compliance Conversations: Spotlight on Source of Income Fair Housing Protections, will take place Tuesday, June 17, at 10 a.m. This free, live-only event will feature attorneys from both the CAA and the California Civil Rights Department in a candid, Q&A-style conversation.
The session will focus on source of income protections under California fair housing laws, which prohibit housing discrimination based on how a tenant pays rent — including through housing vouchers and other subsidies. Whether you manage a single rental home or an entire apartment community, this discussion will offer valuable legal insights and practical guidance on compliance and best practices.
Attendees are encouraged to submit questions in advance through the Zoom registration page. The webinar is open to both CAA members and non-members and qualifies for one unit of continuing education credit under the Certified California Residential Manager (CCRM) program.
Featured speakers include Whitney Prout, executive vice president of legal affairs for CAA, and Kara Brodfueher, attorney for education and outreach at the California Civil Rights Department.
Later in the month, CAA will present Understanding the Section 8 Housing Voucher Program on Wednesday, June 25, at 10 a.m. This training will explain how the Housing Choice Voucher program works and what landlords need to know before accepting a Section 8 tenant.
Topics will include the tenancy approval process, how voucher payments are calculated and issued, procedures and limits on evictions, unit inspection requirements, and applicable fair housing laws.
This webinar is ideal for both new and experienced landlords who want to participate in the program or better understand its requirements. It will be led by Whitney Prout and Monica Deka, compliance and legislative counsel for the California Apartment Association.
The Section 8 webinar is available in two formats:
- Live only: $45 for CAA members, $85 for non-members
- Live and on-demand: $55 for CAA members, $95 for non-members
Like the June 17 session, this webinar also qualifies for one unit of CCRM continuing education credit.
