The Inglewood City Council this week adopted a long-term rent control policy that caps annual increases at 3%.

The Housing Protection Initiative also creates a per-unit fee of up to $168, with 50% of the fee eligible for a pass-through.

Moreover, the ordinance imposes “just cause” eviction policies that mirror most but not all of those in AB 1482, the statewide rent and eviction control law taking effect Jan. 1.

The city will create a $2 million program to administer the ordinance, which is scheduled to sunset in five years.

The California Apartment Association opposed this measure.

“We thank every owner who showed up to council and advocated for the industry.  Your voice was very important in this process and will continue to be,” said Fred Sutton, the association’s senior vice president in Los Angeles. “CAA will keep you updated on the new program and will continue to fight counterproductive housing policy in the city.”
