The Concord City Council is set to reconsider key provisions of its rent control ordinance during a meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 25, and rental property owners have just a few days left to make their voices heard.

Housing providers are urged to submit letters of support for proposed changes that would mitigate the ordinance’s burdensome regulations. Specifically, advocates are calling on the City Council to:

  • Reduce the scope of the just cause eviction requirements.
  • Restore the rent cap to the statewide standard of 5% plus the Consumer Price Index.

Since the announcement of the reconsideration, more than 200 letters from housing providers have been submitted to the City Council, along with nearly four hours of public testimony. The California Apartment Association encourages continued advocacy in the days leading up to the vote.

Deadline to submit letters

Letters must be submitted by 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 25 to be considered by the City Council. Housing providers can use a prefilled message to contact the council, with the option to personalize it by sharing how the ordinance’s strict rent cap and costly relocation and eviction control mandates have affected them.

Attend the meeting on Feb. 25

In addition to submitting letters, housing providers are strongly encouraged to attend the City Council meeting in person to show support for revising the ordinance. The presence of landlords will reinforce the need for policy changes that balance tenant protections with the viability of rental housing operations.

The California Apartment Association and local housing providers will be in attendance to advocate for these changes.
