Proposals that surfaced in the city of Los Angeles this week would prohibit landlords from considering an applicant’s criminal record, credit report or eviction history during the tenant-screening process.  

On Wednesday, City Council members Mike Bonin, Marqueece Harris-Dawson and Nithya Raman unveiled the “Fair Access for Renters” package, touting it as an antidote to homelessness and tenant discrimination. 

The California Apartment Association denounced the measures as unnecessary new layers of bureaucracy that would worsen the city’s housing crisis.
