In a dramatic policy shift, the Salinas City Council on Tuesday voted 5-2 to begin repealing the city’s rent control ordinance and three related policies enacted just six months ago.
The motion directs staff to return with a formal resolution to eliminate the ordinances and replace them with a rental assistance program and ongoing housing updates to the council.
The vote on April 22 followed a major political turnover in Salinas, with five new council members – who opposed the rent control laws — elected since the measures were adopted last October.
