The San Diego City Council will vote on an ordinance on Tuesday, April 25, that would increase the costs of owning and managing rental property while increasing limits on evictions.

The ordinance would repeal the decades’ old Right to Know ordinance and is more restrictive than the California Tenant Protection Act of 2019. This proposed law includes:

  • Strict eviction limits beginning on Day 1 of tenancy.
  • Costly relocation fees to remodel, renovate, or move into your unit.
  • Limits on making renovations and repairs to rental homes.
  • New noticing and disclosure requirements.

Elected leaders are pushing this ordinance as a solution to San Diego’s homelessness crisis, but this proposal would not create a single new unit of housing or provide any funding for housing assistance.
