Nearly 650 CAA members gathered this weekend to honor the Greater Fresno area’s top rental housing professionals and properties. At the 16th Annual Mark of Distinction Awards Program on Saturday, Nov. 9, the California Apartment Association presented the Mark of Distinction Awards in 19 categories. Nominees submitted questionnaires judged by six panelists from various segments of the community outside the rental housing industry. While the deadline to sign bills for the 2013 legislative session passed on Sunday, CAA’s commitment to building relationships with lawmakers is never done. Consider it a year-round endeavor. Despite the federal government shutdown, the Fresno Housing Authority will do its best to keep providing core services to residents, landlords and public partners. That’s the main message in a letter that the Housing Authority’s chief executive officer, Preston Prince, sent to landlords and community partners Tuesday, Oct. 1. Luckily, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has provided a large portion of the October money for Housing Assistance Payments to landlords. More than 100 local CAA Greater Fresno members attended a seminar this month that focused on how members can help reduce crime, boost safety and prepare for emergencies. During a Ready Properties seminar June 11, the local American Red Cross “Be Ready” team (Katrina Poitras, Cayce Baierski and Sandra Santiago-Pinheiro) shared information on preparing a disaster kit, coping after a disaster and dealing with the aftermath of fires at multifamily properties. With thousands of absentee ballots left to count, Tuesday’s election on privatizing household garbage collection in Fresno remains up for grabs. Of votes tallied, 50.62 percent support Measure G, which would outsource residential garbage service to Mid Valley Disposal. No votes represent 49.74 percent of ballots counted. Only 262 votes separate the two. The California Apartment Association supports Measure G, which would prop up the city’s general fund, preventing public safety layoffs. A week after it appeared Andy Vidak had captured the state Senate’s 16th District seat, the Republican from Hanford is heading for a runoff election against Democrat Leticia Perez of Bakersfield. Perez conceded last week when Vidak had about 52 percent of votes tallied. Area news media reported Vidak the clear-cut winner. But after more counting, Vidak has just 49.9 percent of the vote. To win this five-candidate race, he needed more than 50 percent. Perez, with 43.9 percent of the vote, will face Vidak again during a July 23 runoff to determine which candidate will replace Michael Rubio.

When landlords in Fresno County evict a tenant, they’ll now fill out paperwork intended to make the process safer. The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday unveiled a revised “letter of instruction” for landlords to complete before authorities serve notices on tenants losing their homes.
