The California Apartment Association is turning to its members for help thwarting what could become Santa Rosa’s second rent control measure in 17 months.
Less than one year after voters rejected rent control in Santa Rosa, the North Bay Organizing Project and a group of local activists are collecting signatures in hopes of placing an even more burdensome rent control “just cause” eviction ordinance on the November 2018 ballot.
The group has until late June to collect over 8,500 signatures to get their proposed law on the November ballot.

Participation in voucher program should remain voluntary
The Marin County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday will consider “source of income protections” for prospective renters that would essentially require rental housing owners to participate in the Section 8 program.
Supervisors can grant preliminary approval of the proposal during their Tuesday, Oct. 25, meeting. A second vote at a later date is required for formal adoption.

Marin County supervisors abandoned plans for a just-cause eviction ordinance this month, opting instead for CAA-supported alternatives, including voluntary rent guidelines and a landlord-incentives program.
The decision came Feb. 9 as the county board explored various policy options to preserve affordable housing and prevent resident displacement.
Heading into the meeting, the California Apartment Association North Coast objected to two ordinances under consideration. One of them, a just-cause eviction measure, would require rental owners to prove “cause” in court or, in some cases, before a political body whenever needing to remove a problem resident. The Marin County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday afternoon will consider adopting a just-cause eviction ordinance and other measures to address the area’s housing issues.
At the Feb. 9 meeting, county supervisors are expected to provide staff with next steps in creating policies to prevent the displacement of existing residents and to preserve housing affordability in unincorporated areas. A just-cause eviction measure is among the options being considered.
