The COVID-19 Tenant Relief Act of 2020 (“CTRA”), commonly known as AB 3088, took effect on August 31, 2020. CTRA provides sweeping protections from eviction for residents unable to pay rent and other charges due between March 1, 2020 and January 31, 2021 due to circumstances directly related to the COVID-19 pandemic. It also extends “just cause” protections (as defined by the Tenant Protection Act, AB 1482), to all properties and tenancies through January 31, 2021. On January 29, 2020, SB 91 extended and expanded CTRA’s tenant protections.
