The City of Alameda’s rent control program has been enacted through a series of ordinances over the years. The original program became effective in 2015. In the summer of 2019, the program was amended to prohibit evictions without just cause. The program also requires relocation assistance when a tenancy is terminated for certain reasons or when rent is increased by more than 10% over a 12-month period. With respect to certain properties, the program includes rent control provisions that took effect September 1, 2019.

On September 3, 2019, the City repealed its layers of ordinances and enacted a revised scheme that took immediate effect. This document is intended to provide general guidance to Alameda’s rental housing providers on the current revised rent control program in the City.
