In the June primary, candidates friendly to the rental housing industry enjoyed a clean sweep of local races throughout the Sacramento Valley.

Mallori Spilker

In each local contest, the candidate backed by the California Apartment Association’s Political Action Committee secured victory. Choosing the right candidate to support is a role that CAAPAC takes seriously, both at the state and local level, said Mallori Spilker, government affairs director for CAA Sacramento Valley.

“The endorsement process gives us an opportunity to learn about the candidates and their views on issues affecting our members,” Spilker said. “Their positions on issues like rent control, fees and taxes on rental properties, and government regulation of our industry were key factors in deciding whom to support.”

Here’s how the elections broke down in the Sacramento area:

Sacramento County

Winning re-election to the Board of Supervisors were the following CAAPAC-supported incumbents: Supervisors Phil Serna, Patrick Kennedy and Don Nottoli (unopposed). Incumbent Sacramento County District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert also won re-election after garnering 64 percent of the vote.

City of Sacramento

It was a big night for CAAPAC-backed incumbents on the City Council, with the following candidates winning re-election: District 1 Councilwoman Angelique Ashby (74 percent of the vote); District 5 Councilman Jay Schenirer, (57 percent of the vote); District 7 Councilman Rick Jennings III, (75 percent of the vote); and District 3 Councilman Jeff Harris (without opposition).

Placer County

CAAPAC-backed Bonnie Gore defeated incumbent Supervisor Jack Duran in the race for the District 1 seat on the Board of Supervisors. Gore, the vice mayor of Roseville, secured 62 percent of the vote. In District 2, Supervisor Robert Weygandt was re-elected without opposition.

Yolo County

In the race for District 3 county supervisor, CAAPAC-supported candidate Gary Sandy defeated his opponent Meg Stallard. Current District 2 Supervisor Don Saylor was re-elected without opposition.

Davis

Nine candidates vied for two open seats on the Davis City Council. CAAPAC endorsed three candidates, Mark West, Gloria Partida and Dan Carson. Partida and Carson finished as the top-two vote-getters and secured the open seats.
