CAA petition sends Santa Rosa rent control law to voters in June

After the California Apartment Association qualified a referendum on Santa Rosa’s rent control ordinance, the City Council on Tuesday decided to put the issue before voters in a June 6 special election.

The council had two other options: to repeal the law or place it before voters in November 2018.

Although the rent control ordinance was passed by the council in August, a signature-gathering effort spearheaded by CAA prevented it from taking effect. The ordinance will remain on hold until voters decide its fate in June.

Last month, election officials confirmed that the referendum petition had generated 9,648 valid signatures, far more than the 8,485 needed for it to qualify.
